Fatal accident happens Sunday

A two-vehicle accident resulted in the death of Dylan A. Hoffman, 18, of Sherrard on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010. Passengers and the driver of the second vehicle suffered injuries. Kevin A. Williams, 16, of Matherville, was the driver of the 1996 Kia. His injuries included a fractured skull and fractured ribs.

A Milan couple, Byron F. Wakefield, 75, and Linda Wakefield, 72 were also injured. Byron had external bruising and lacerations to the right arm. His wife had an open frature to an ankle and suffered internal injuries. The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. on Rte 67 in Rock Island County.

At 5:36 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 26, deputies from the Rock Island County Sheriff's department responded to a crash involving two passenger vehicles at the intersection of Rte. 67 and 176th Ave. West.

According to a report from Captain William Kauzlarich of the Rock Island Sheriff's office, the Wakefield couple was wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. The sheriff's department is still trying to determine whether seat belts were used by occupants of the other car.

A silver-colored 1996 Infiniti, four-door, was occupied by the two males and traveling east on 176th Ave. West approaching the Route 17 intersection. The Wakefields were in a silver-colored 2008 Kia four-door car. The were traveling north on Rte 67.

According to a witness who was following the Infiniti, that car entered the intersection after failing to stop at the intersection. The Infiniti was struck by the Kia on the passenger side of the vehicle. Following the collision both drivers and the female passenger were transported to Trinity West Hospital. Hoffman was transported to Genesis Hospital's Illini campus and later died as a result of his injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
