ALEDO — The Illinois State Police charged a former Keithsburg Police officer with official misconduct and theft for receiving pay for hours he allegedly didn't work, according to a news release from the Mercer County Sheriff's Department.

Thomas Bennett, 52, of Seaton was arrested July 21 and was released after posting $2,500 of his bond.

Mercer County Sheriff Dustin Terrill said the city of Keithsburg came to him with concerns that Bennett had received compensation for hours not actually worked for the city.

Terrill said his office reviewed the time sheets and requested that Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 2 conduct an investigation into Bennett's conduct. Bennett was also a Mercer County Deputy Sheriff. The investigation began July 5 and Bennett resigned from the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office July 11.

Terrill said the sheriff's office is continuing to review Bennett’s activities during the course of his employment by the Sheriff’s Office.
