United hires library aide, basketball coach

United CUSD #304 Board of Education held its monthly session, Oct. 9 in the Unit Office in Alexis.

Heather Davis was approved as a library aide at the North Campus Elementary School in Alexis. Steve Cairns was employed as fresh-soph boy's basketball coach at the South Campus.

Building and Grounds Committee Chairman Rick Elliott reported that the group had recently toured the area recommended for the new softball diamond. He discussed various steps, which are needed to prepare the area such as scraping the ground and removing sod to prepare it for the installation of drainage tile. Additional work will be discussed at the November meeting.

Board members authorized superintendent Jeff Whitsitt to sell a '98 Ford van, which is no longer needed by the district. He was also authorized to seek snow-removal bids for each campus.

Board members approved the financial report, the treasurer's monthly statement, activity fund accounts, minutes from two previous meetings and the payment of bills that were examined.

Upcoming events were announced: "Pumpkin Patch" Carnival is Oct. 16 at North Elementary School; Grades 4 and 5 at the West Campus will see "Honest Abe" at the Orpheum Theater, Galesburg, Oct. 22; Putnam Museum Outreach Programs, for KG, second and third grades at West Campus, will be Oct. 24; Halloween Parties on Oct. 31, and Parent-Teacher Conferences Nov. 6 and 7.

An executive session was held to discuss personnel and student discipline.

The next board meeting is Nov. 13, 7 p.m., in the Unit Office.
