Shane McDonough of the Rock Island Arsenal spoke to the Aledo School Board Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at its regular meeting about furthering a relationship between the arsenal and the board. McDonough helps assist military families in the transition when they move helping them find housing and get their children enrolled in local school districts.

The board agreed to accept a partnership with the arsenal and adopt a resolution for support. McDonough is traveling throughout the area talking to other boards to elicit support. Aledo Superintendent of Schools Alan Boucher said he would be attending a signing ceremony January 15 at the arsenal.

The board signed a cooperative agreement to pledge their support for the new community school district and the nine duties that it can perform and will send it to the regional board of education office.

The board directed Boucher to draw up a resolution of thanks to publicly thank the Apollo PTO for the money it has raised for projects within the district over the past few years.

The board received an overview of construction projects the district is considering including the replacement of parts of the Apollo roof and the gym floor and bleacher project.

The board is consulting an architect regarding the removal of a non-load bearing wall that separates the high school band and choir rooms. "It's packed now," said Boucher. "There is no way they will all fit with the new students."

After a closed session the board agreed to hire Arlene Walthall as an aide at Apollo and accepted the retirement of Apollo head cook Bev. Wildermuth after 30 years of service to the district.
