The Aledo and Westmer School Districts have consolidated and will become one for the 2009-2010 school year, meaning a new name, new colors and a new mascot is required. The new school board for Consolidated Unit School District #404 determined the selection process.

According to CUSD #404 board member Trisha Hank, "the community support shown to the Aledo and Westmer school districts over the years is what has made the districts so successful, whether it is for sporting events, band concerts, musicals, etc... So it's important that the community be allowed the opportunity to be involved in the process of name, color and mascot selection."

Name, color and mascot submissions can be made in two ways, either electronically or by mailing ideas to either Aledo or Westmer's unit office.

1) Electronically -- The link for submitting suggestions will be on the main page of both the Aledo School District and the Westmer School District's web sites.  Simply go to or and click on the link that says, "Your district Name-Mascot-Color Suggestion for the Aledo Westmer Condolidation.  This link will become active on Dec. 17.

2) Hard Copy -- Submissions may be dropped off or mailed to any school office or unit office in the Aledo and Westmer districts. The unit office addresses are: Unit 201, 402 E. Main, Aledo IL, 61231, or Unit 203, 203 N. Washington St, Joy IL, 61260.

Anyone may participate and can submit an unlimited number of times with an unlimited number of ideas. Names for the district, color combinations and/or mascot ideas are being sought. Sketches, pictures, and color examples are welcome. Your name is not required on your submission.

The submission deadline is Jan. 10, 2009.

"A committee will meet prior to the submission deadline to determine parameters for the choices, for example, we can't use the colors or mascot of a neighboring district, or we can't select a color combination that is difficult to order for uniforms," says Hank. "Once all of the ideas are submitted, this committee will then narrow down the ideas to a manageable number and the ideas will go to the students for a vote."
