Fifth grad science teacher Chris Swanson speaks to the Mercer County School board about an engineering camp she wants to offer this summer.

The board approved a proposal from fifth grade science teacher Chris Swanson to hold an engineering camp at the intermediate school this summer Monday through Thursday for two and a half hours a day.

“Students learn with hands on experience, said Swanson. “This may help to encourage them to have a career in science.

Swanson said she will be charging the students $50 apiece to attend. The cost includes supplies for the camp and rental of equipment.

Swanson asked the board for a total of $600 to pay for the cost of the instructor and for up to three aides.

Swanson said she may try to open the camp up to sixth graders as well since she didn’t hold the camp last year. This will be the third time Swanson has held the camp. The first time she held it she had 12 students and the second time she had 19 students.
