CSC Senior Classes and Trips for October

Carl Sandburg College is offering the following classes and trips for seniors in October. These classes are only available to those 50 years of age or older. To register for any of these classes, or for more information, please call (309) 344-1512 or visit the Main Campus in Galesburg.

Speed Spanish

The purpose of this class is to give you an immediate speaking ability in Spanish.  Spanish is the leading language in not only Spain and Mexico, but throughout Central and South America.  Focus will be on presenting fundamental elements of the Spanish language including proper pronunciation, common vocabulary, and basic grammar concepts.  Objectives include:  increased appreciation of the Spanish language and culture, develop ability to carry on simple conversations on a variety of topics and introduce sufficient vocabulary to facilitate basic communication in the workplace, in social settings or when traveling.  Minimum of 6 students by Monday 09/27/10 and maximum of 15 students.  No cancellations will be accepted after this date; however, a substitute may attend.  Not limited to seniors. Class will be on Tuesdays, beginning Oct. 5 for eight weeks from 3-5 p.m.

Train Your Brain

Want to stay at the top of your game?  If you are over the age of 50 and looking for a fun, healthy aging program designed to boost your brain power, you will certainly benefit from this curriculum created by the central Illinois chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.  Participants will learn how memory works, what happens to our memory as we age and what we can do to improve our memory skills. This three part series will discuss steps to take care of your brain now.  Topics are as follows:  Week 1- Now What Was I Saying, Week 2- How Diet and Exercise Affect the Brain, and Week 3- Memory Techniques to Manage Stress.  Minimum of 10 students by 10/04/10 and maximum of 40 students. Class will be on Mondays, beginning Oct. 11 for three weeks from 1:30-3 p.m.

State Election News and Views

This coffee and conversation class will take a look of the issues and personalities that shape the state election this fall.  We will examine how the Illinois Government is structured along with the legislature and constitution.  The course will present an overview of the state government, how it should work and if it is working.  As a reminder, this is a discussion course and respect is essential.  Minimum of 8 students and maximum of 25 students. Class will be on Thursdays, Oct. 14 and 21, only, from 10-11:30 a.m.

Computer Basics 2

This class will provide an opportunity to build on the knowledge and skills gained in Basics I.  Learn how to organize and find files that you have saved on your computer.  Explore more about word processing and surfing the World Wide Web.   Discover how to customize your computer, from controlling the mouse double click speed to choosing screen savers. Prerequisite: Computer Basics I or instructor permission.   Minimum of 8 students by 10/19/10 and maximum of 12 students.  Class will be on Tuesdays, beginning Oct. 26 for six weeks from 1-3 p.m.

Small Town Ghosts

Do you believe in ghosts? Paranormal investigator Barb Huyser, has been participating in organized paranormal investigations since 1977.  After moving to western Illinois in 1996, she has explored several cemeteries and investigated numerous haunted houses in this area.  Barb has authored a book titled Small Town Ghosts and will take us step by step through some fascinating investigations as well as new paranormal occurrences she has recently experienced. Not limited to seniors. Class will be on Tuesday, Oct. 26, only, from 6:30-9 p.m.

Redesigning Your Jewelry

Come with something old and leave with something new!  Explore solutions to refresh your old, broken or unwanted jewelry. Take apart and update your old pieces by turning them into fabulous wearable art! See how creative you can become with encouragement and guidance. Simple tools and necessary materials will be available, along with demonstrations, advice, solutions, and a box of found objects.  You bring old or broken jewelry, parts, beads and things to class then add to the 'found objects' box, which we'll share.  Of course you may keep your own pieces if you like. Make as many pieces as you can during class time. Class will be on Wednesdays, beginning Oct. 27 for two weeks from 2-4 p.m.

Classy Letters, Holiday Mailings & More

Learn how to combine images and text to create a variety of impressive documents with Microsoft Word 2007. You will also learn how to create cool letters along with labels and envelopes to send mailings to all of your friends and relatives using Microsoft Word’s 2007 mail merge feature.  You can use the skills you will gain in this class to send holiday mailings, reunion mailings and more.   Prerequisite:  Computer Basics I or Instructor Permission. Minimum of 8 students by 10/21/10 and maximum of 12 students. Class will be on Thursdays, beginning Oct. 28 for four weeks from 1-3 p.m.
