Carl Sandburg College CABI Classes for February

Carl Sandburg College Center for Agriculture, Business and Industry (CABI) is offering the following workshops and courses during February. Classes will be held at the Educational Technology Center in the Sandburg Mall, the Center for Manufacturing Excellence building on the Main Campus or at CSC. Pre-registration is required and early registration is advised. Refrigeration Appliance Repair Technician Course

These courses are designed to provide an in-home service professional with the skills and knowledge to correctly and efficiently diagnose and repair residential appliances. This class specializes in residential refrigerators. The base fee includes: instruction, course materials, lab supplies and daily lunches. These week-long classes meet 1-5 p.m. on Monday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, and 8 a.m.- 12 p.m. on Friday. Maximum of 12 students. Class will be on Monday-Friday, Feb. 7-11.

10 Hour Construction I Industry

Students will learn the major provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health in the construction industry. Primary topics include: the inspection and citation process, working and walking surfaces including ladders and scaffolds, hazardous materials, fall protection, electrical safety, material handling and more. OSHA’s 10 Hour Construction card will be issued upon completion of this class. Class will be on Thursday, Feb. 10 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. (lunch on your own) and Friday, Feb. 11 from 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

Professional Presentation Skills Using Microsoft PowerPoint 2007

Making a presentation to a group can be a very stressful task.  When you make a presentation, do you feel like you control the stage or do you feel like the stage controls you?  This course will teach you ways to give confident, enthusiastic, and persuasive presentations.  Topics include:  confronting fears, the keys to successes, focusing on the main ideas, organizing the message and identifying the parts of a presentation.  With an emphasis on the importance of preparation with Microsoft PowerPoint, this class will give you expertise to organize your content, practice your delivery, relax your tension and make an impact!    Lunch will be on your own from 12-1 p.m.  Minimum of 6 students by 02/04/11 and maximum of 20 students. Class will be on Friday, Feb. 11, only, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Laundry Appliance Repair Technician Course

Food Service Sanitation – Full Certification

This course is for food service operators and their supervisory personnel to prepare them for the Illinois State Examination required by law. Areas of study include how to properly prepare food, required sanitation procedures and the requirements which restaurants must fulfill to meet Illinois State Health Codes. Students will take the State Exam at the end of the full 15-hour license course. Workbooks (optional) for the course may be purchased from the Carl Sandburg College Bookstore prior to the first class meeting. Limited to 20 students. Call Linda at (309) 345-3501 to register. This course will update Certified Food Service Sanitation managers on changes in food code and emphasize knowledge in areas of general food safety and preventing food-borne illness. Cardiovascular Update

This 3-hour presentation is intended as an update in specific areas of cardiovascular nursing including: pharmacology, heart failure, and stroke. An overview of cardiovascular medications will be presented along with current trends and research in the treatment of heart failure. Recognition and treatment of stroke victims according to American Heart Association protocols will be presented. This represents an opportunity for anyone in the nursing or allied health professions to update their knowledge and may meet Nursing Continuing Education requirements. (3 CEUs). Class will be on Tuesday, Feb. 15, only, from 1-4 p.m.

Lean Manufacturing Overview

This course is designed to provide an overview of Lean Manufacturing principles. Participants will learn the goals of a lean system, and the concepts of value stream mapping, visual management, error proofing, standard operations, onepiece flow, Kanban system, total productive maintenance and lean metrics. Maximum of 20 students. Class will be on Saturday, Feb. 19, only, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

This workshop puts you in the driver’s seat and is designed to help you become more entrepreneurial by using innovation as a key business development strategy. Learn how to use innovation to drive your business, discovery new market opportunities, and overcome key business challenges. At the workshop you will learn: What innovation is, The implications that a knowledge economy has on your business, How to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, How to innovate using “key drivers” and “rules of the road”, How you must think, what you must develop, and the

Better Business Writing with Microsoft Word 2007

Excellent business communication is essential to get your point across in the workplace.  Yet many of us have not learned how to communicate effectively through writing.  This workshop will teach you the key techniques in creating persuasive and more effective memos, letters, reports, and emails.  Relearn grammatical skills, punctuation, word choices and sentence structure that will enable you to recognize and correct problems, avoid redundancies and ultimately communicate more effectively.  This course will help you grow more confident in your ability to express yourself clearly to managers, coworkers and customers leading to better interactions and professional relationships.  Lunch will be on your own from 12-1 p.m.  Minimum of 6 students by 02/18/11 and maximum of 20 students. Class will be on Friday, Feb. 25, only, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

CNC Machine Tool Technology

The CNC Machine Tool Technology program is designed to support and prepare students for the manufacturing and tooling industries. Students will learn basic skills needed to set up and operate lathes, milling machines, saws, drills, inspection equipment, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines. Programming of CNC machines, job planning, geometric dimensioning and tolerance, statistical process control, blueprint reading, and machining theory is also a large part of this program. Maximum of 12 students. Class will be on Saturdays, beginning Feb. 26 for two weeks from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
