Extension provides opportunities to 4-Hers, youth
Are you looking for a fun way to spend your summer days? Rock Island County 4-H has a variety of awesome summer camps that incorporate hands-on learning. Meet new friends as you explore topics of interest to you! Most camps will be at Rock Island County Extension at 321 West 2nd Ave., Milan, IL unless noted. You don't have to be in 4-H to attend, so sign up today! Space is limited–first come, first served. Half-fee tuition waivers are available for those who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Here's what's coming up:
June 13-17: Traveling Science Camp, 10 am–1 pm (8 and up) - Meet at a different location each day as you experience some of the finest science attractions in the Quad Cities! The travelling camp includes a visit to the Putnam Museum for natural science exhibits and an IMAX movie; Niabi Zoo for animal explorations, Quad City Botanical Center for rainforest adventures; the Quad City International Airport to explore space; and a journey on the Mississippi River aboard the Celebration Belle! Campers should bring a sack lunch each day. The fee is $50 public/$45 4-H members - includes admission to all attractions.
June 20-24: Scrap Camp, 9 am–Noon (9 and up) Do you love to scrapbook? During this fun filled week, campers will create awesome scrapbooking projects. Learn how to make great page layouts, craft your own paper and utilize embellishments. You'll also make your own summertime 2011 memory book. Supplies provided. $40 public/$35 -H members.
June 20-24 Future Engineers Camp, 1 - 4 pm (8 and up) Calling all future engineers! You'll have a great time making your own inventions using a variety of mediums–everything from Legos, and Tinkertoys, to scrap wood, duct tape, PVC pipe and others. You’ll also build an item based on a sample each day - from recycled windchimes to birdhouses, rockets and more! $40 public/$35 4-H members.
June 20-24 USA Girls Camp, 1 - 4 pm (Ages 6 - 11) Explore American history through stories, games foods and crafts inspired by American Girl Doll books. Meet Kaya, an adventurous Nez Perce girl growing up in 1764, lively Rebecca Rubin growing up in New York in 1914, courageous Addy Walker growing up in the midst of the Civil War, Felicity Merriman who experienced the Revolutionary War, and others! A fun way to explore history! $40 public/$35 4-H members.
June 27–July 1: Native American Explorations & Outdoor Adventures, 9 am–Noon (8 and up) Meet at the Quad City Conservation Club on Big Island in Milan to explore the history, legends, and lifestyle of Native Americans like the Sauk, Meskwaki and others who lived in our region. Investigate nature, go fishing, hike, learn way-finding, play outdoor games, cook over a campfire, make nature-inspired crafts and more! $40 public/$35 4-H member.
July 5–July 8: Cooking Camp, 9 am - Noon (Ages 9 - 14) Note 4 day camp due to 4th of July Holiday on Monday. Take your cooking and baking to the next level as you learn techniques to prepare fun, tasty new recipes, from a full meal, to healthy snacks, to delectable desserts. You'll prepare and sample different foods that you will eat for lunch. Also learn about kitchen and food safety, table setting and etiquette. $30 public/$25 4-H members.
July 5 - 8 Youtube/Computer Design, 1–4 pm (10 and up)Note 4 day camp due to 4th of July Holiday on Monday. You'll create your own skits and work in groups to make fun and entertaining youtube videos. Learn how to write, design, edit and upload your work. We'll also spend some time learning how to design a web site. $30 public/$25 4-H members.
July 19 – 24 – Explore American Heritage in the 4-H Building at the Rock Island County Fair, East Moline, IL! You’ll pan for gold, churn butter and knead bread dough, play old fashioned games, explore furs and ID animal tracks, learn about Native American history, work in a vegetable garden, and more! The hands-on activities are free and will be open Tues – Friday from 4 – 8 pm, Saturday from Noon – 8 pm and Sunday from Noon – 3 pm. The 4-H at the Fair activities are sponsored in part by Modern Woodmen of America.
July 25–29, Magical Muggles Camp, 9 am - Noon, (8 and up) If you are a fan of Harry Potter, you'll love this camp! Through role-playing and activities, you'll enroll in "wizard" school where you'll take classes in Potions (science), Care of Magical Creatures (animals and insects), Arithmagic (math), and Herbology (nature). You'll play Quidditch, make fantastical creations (art) and dress up for a "Transfiguration Ball"! Ignite your creativity! $40 public/$35 4-H members.
