Fire claims five lives near Sherrard

Five lives were lost in an early morning mobile home fire three miles southwest of Sherrard March 27.

According to Mercer County Sheriff Tom Thompson, one adult and four children didn't survive the fire.

One adult and two children did make it out of the fire.

The names of the victims were being withheld prior to the notification of the family members.

The 9-1-1 call came into the Mercer County Sheriff's Department at 12:51 a.m.

The mobile home was located at 300th Avenue and 140th Street southwest of Sherrard. Fire departments from Sherrard, Matherville, Viola and Orion were among those called out.

The fire marshal was on the scene Wednesday morning as well as a crime scene technician. Thompson indicated that each were normally called out in such situations.

The cause of the fire is to be determined.
