Former Pastor of the Viola United Methodist Church Lorraine Martin and son, Steve Martin, started the Viola Community Food Pantry in 1980.

They were made aware of the need when a person came to their door. Then a

family came to her home in February 1982 requesting assistance for food so she decided there was a calling for the food pantry.

Pastor Martin opened a small room in the Viola United Methodist Church on the east side of the building and personally stocked it until past few years when area groups heard of her generosity and started donating to assist her.

Today, many area small organizations and also very large companies and local organizations contribute with dollar donations and food.
