News from Eliza
Eliza Township meetings are Monday, May 9 at 7 p.m. at the Eliza Community Center, with the board of managers meeting May 3 at 6:30 p.m. Township meetings are open to the public.
The Eliza Community Club meeting is also May 3 at 7 p.m. at the Eliza Community Center.
The Eliza Lions Club meets at Eliza Kountry Kafe on May 11 for the regular meeting at 7 p.m. and the dinner meeting is May 25 at 7 p.m. Preparations for this year's Mercer County Fair took up a good portion of the April 27 meeting. The Eliza Lions will be manning the fair gates on the same schedule and again the Rudy Green Memorial Tractor ride will be held Saturday, July 16. The Mercer County Fair is the halfway point. The route has changed, however. Tractors will go to the fair through Keithsburg and Seaton this year, and come back through Joy. All Lions, Lionesses, and helpers will be needed to fill the many jobs done each year to make the ride a success. Be sure to mark your calendar for that day.
The Eliza American Legion held its regular April meeting at 7 p.m. on May 2. The Legion will again be pulling duty at this year’s Memorial Day ceremony at Eliza Creek cemetery. They will be doing their normal posting of the colors and 21-gun salute and taps at the end of the ceremony.
Eliza Community Church will hold its Mother's Day "Muffins for Mom" breakfast on Sunday, May 8 from 9 - 9:45 a.m. Bring the whole family to enjoy muffins, fruit, coffee, juice and milk. There will be no Sunday School that morning.
Eliza softball is alive and well. Brad and Jenny Green and their many helpers are getting things ready to provide the citizens of Eliza township with another exciting season of Pee Wee and Junior
softball. There will be one Pee Wee team coached by Brad and Trudi Shepard and a Junior League softball team coached by Royce and Julie Green. So far there are 16-17 kids on the PeeWee, and 12-13 Juniors who will provide a monster good time to you if you can make any of their games at the ball diamond behind the Eliza Community Center.
Anyone who missed the two sign up days and wants to enroll their child on either team is welcome to contact Brad at (563) 260 1198. Of course the ball field will be in great shape, and the concession stand will provide that supper (or supplement) that you missed to make the game in time. Another great slice of the American Pie if you can afford the time.
The old refrigerators in the concession stand have finally conked out. If you have a full sized frig in good working order that you could donate to the stand, call Brad at (563) 260 7798.
A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at the Union Church building at Eliza Creek Cemetery on May 30 at 1:30 p.m.
