Memorial Day was celebrated in Eliza with around 70 or so local citizens and visitors from many places filling the old Union church building for a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May  31. The keynote speaker Mike Zecher gave an excellent speech about America and American values highlighted by an inspiring reading of the Gettysburg Address. The youngster’s reading of a patriotic poem and singing was appreciated by all. Discussed in the business portion of the program was an upcoming Trivia night to raise money for some much needed upgrades to the interior of the building. Next year’s chairperson is Sherri Butler.

Mercer County Lions clubs pride themselves  in being among the leaders in helping those who need assistance in dealing with vision, hearing, and/or diabetes treatments. This help is supplied by contributions from citizens who no longer need glasses, hearing aids, and diabetes equipment and donate them to a Lions club. Even old broken items can be recycled by the Lions organization to be put back into service for a needy person. If you can help this very valuable organization, please clean out that old drawer or closet, and help them help others. I promise it will make you feel better to do so. Any of the Lions in the area will be happy to accept your offer. Better yet come to one of the two monthly meeting at the Eliza Kafe (6:30 p.m.) and see what we are all about yourself.

Ken Cox also has an aluminum collection program that helps fund activities if you’re looking for a place to recycle those cans and tab tops.

A full schedule of events detailing the Lions Club Rudy Green tractor ride will be released next month. Just be sure to mark your calendar for Saturday, July 16, for this great event.
