Dr. Marion Geraldine Sheriff, 94, of DeKalb died Friday, June 10, 2011, at Oak Crest Retirement Center in DeKalb.

A memorial service will be held October 1, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in Greenmound Cemetery, Keithsburg.

Marion was born September 30, 1916 in Keithsburg. She began her love of teaching young people in several rural schools in Mercer County after graduating from Blackburn College in Carlinville. During WWII, she served in the United States Navy WAVES. Afterward, she returned to school, earning a master's degree in education from the University of Illinois and later a doctorate from Columbia University in New York. Marion taught in the Education Department at Northern Illinois University for over thirty years.

Marion is survived by her three nephews, John Sheriff, John and Paul Darrah, and two nieces Barbara Darrah Rummel, and Janet Sheriff Larson, and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Paul and Almarine Anne Weightman Sheriff, a sister, Lucile Sheriff Darrah, brothers, Paul and Fredrick Sheriff, and nephew Donald Wayne Sheriff.

The family wishes to thank Mary Regole for being a faithful friend for many years.

Memorials may be given to the Greenmound Cemetery or a charity of choice.
