Shirley A. Swanson, age 71, of Walnut, formerly of Alpha, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2011 at her daughter’s home.  Services are 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2011 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Woodhull. Burial is in the Woodhull Cemetery.  Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, at Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home in Alpha where a memorial fund will be established.  Online condolences can be made at www.petersonwallinknox.com.

She was born Sept. 21, 1940 in McClure, a daughter of Loyd and Mary Lee Sronce Adams.  She attended New Athens Elementary School and Collinsville High School and married Bill Crouse Aug. 8, 1956 in Belleville.  She later married Robert (Bob) Swanson Feb. 10, 1977 in Cambridge.  He died in 1993.

Shirley was employed as a rural mail carrier in Walnut and Alpha for 26 years.  She was an EMT for Tri-County Ambulance, a Cub Scout leader, member of Woodhull/Alpha Jaycees and a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Woodhull where she served on the council and was a former treasurer.

She enjoyed oil painting, genealogy, working on the computer, collecting giraffes, traveling and being with her family.

Survivors include three daughters: Jeni (Neal) Nelson of Alpha, Vicki (Jay) Painter of Colona and Chris (Barry) Harper of Geneseo; two sisters, Mary Weller of Decatur and Sharon (Kent) Prosek of Piedmont, Mo.; two step-daughters: Debbie (Randy) Barton of Farmington and Laurie Wolf of Milan, seven grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son: Dean Crouse, one brother: Leonard Adams and a sister: Barbara Jean Adams.
