Outdoor water facilities to open Memorial Day weekend in Galesburg

Memorial Day is viewed by many as the unofficial kick-off to summer.

The city of Galesburg is no exception as the city announced outdoor water facilities will open for the summer this weekend.

Here's what you need to know.

Lakeside Water Park

Where: 1033 South Lake Storey Road, Galesburg

Hours: The park opens for the season Saturday and is open from noon to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The park is open from noon to 7 p.m. Friday through Sundays.

What: The water park includes a zero-depth pool with exciting water geysers, a 25-yard lap competition pool, 122-foot body flume slide, 30-foot tube slide, and an 8-foot kiddie slide along with additional water play features.

Costs: $7 Monday through Thursday and $8 Friday through Sunday.

Lake Storey Beach and Park

Where: 1572 Machen Drive, Galesburg

Hours: Daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; boat rentals from boon to 7 p.m.

What: The "swim at your own risk" facility does not have any lifeguards and permits swimming in the designated roped-off area. Anyone under the age of 16 must be supervised by someone 16 years of age or older. Alcohol and drugs are prohibited anywhere in the park. Rental options include paddleboats, single kayaks, tandem kayaks, canoes or stand-up paddleboards. Personal canoes, kayaks, jon boats, and small sailboats may be utilized on the lake for free, as long as they are registered with the Illinois Department of Conservation. The city only allows electric trolling motors on Lake Storey, gas-power motors may not be used. Kayak launches are available at the beach or east boat ramp.

Wading Pools and Splash Pads

What: The city of Galesburg offers free wading pools and splash pads at several parks, which are also set to open Memorial Day weekend.

Wading pools: Located at Lincoln Park, O.N.Custer Park, and H.T.Custer Park.

Splash pads: Available at Rotary Park and Kiwanis Park.

Lakeside Makos Swim Team

Dates: May 30 through July 11

Ages: 5 through 18 years (Graduating Seniors)

Site: Lakeside Water Park

Fee: $130 per swimmer/$125 for each additional swimmer by May 31

What: This summer swim program is focused on skill development, character development, competitive swim skills, and summer fun. Swimmers do not need previous experience, but they do need to be able to swim 25 yards. Swim practice and home meets are held at Lakeside Water Park. Registration cost includes entry into all local swim meets, a Lakeside Splashzone Water Park membership and a team t-shirt.
