Sponsorships keep fair going strong

The Mercer County Fair Board took a look at the numbers for this year's fair at its Aug. 17 meeting.

"We're not in terrible shape," said fair board president Roger Grundstrom. "Subtract the sponsorships and it doesn't look pretty."

While the sponsorships helped the board out there is still plenty of reasons to be concerned. "Potentially we could lose half of our rehab money."

About three years ago the board started soliciting corporate sponsorships from businesses in the community.

"The first year we started in April and didn't get too much," said Grundstrom, But the past two years the sponsorships have picked up considerably. Neither Grundstrom or treasurer Don Manthe knew yet how much money the board had raised through sponsorships because all of the money wasn't in yet, but it was more than $20,000. "You can add up the sponsorship money and see what saved our butt this year," said Grundstrom.

Attendance to the fair was a little down most days this year except for Wednesday when it was so hot it affected attendance a great deal.
