Carl Sandburg College will host “Broadway Favourites” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 25, in the CSC Fine Arts Theatre located in Building F on the Main Campus. James Hutchings, coordinator and instructor of music, and Susan Sharp, coordinator and instructor of theater, will present scenes and songs from Broadway favorites. The show is intended for all audiences and will feature familiar productions as well as some new material from Broadway.

The performances will showcase Sondheim productions and much more. “Gypsy,” “Into the Woods,” “Follies,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” and “Carousel” are just a few of the shows being represented.

“It’s good for our students to see us on stage,” says Sharp. “Sometimes it’s not enough to tell students you understand their anxieties or frustrations with performing – sometimes you have to show them you know what you’re talking about.” Sharp admits she has suffered stage fright and struggles with memorization but has pushed beyond her boundaries. “I know firsthand what guts it takes to put yourself out there and perform. Despite my fears, it is a great high when you succeed, and it is a great story for the record if you mess up. You’ve got to be able to laugh at yourself.”

Hutchings is no stranger to performing, having appeared in several operas and choirs. While he’s newer to musical theatre, it comes naturally for him. The energy he uses in directing the choirs at CSC is the same energy he puts into teaching. “This is a great opportunity for the CSC community, not only because two of our own are on stage, but because this is great music that runs the gamut from silly to entertaining, to downright heartbreaking,” said Hutchings. “It's a casual evening, but I know we'll have fun, so I hope audiences will share in that fun with us. We definitely don't take ourselves too seriously, and my hope is that, with the audience, we'll enjoy an evening of laughter and song.”

Tickets for the March 25 performance are $10 for adults, $5 for area students. Admission is free for CSC faculty, staff and students. To purchase tickets, contact the Carl Sandburg College Music hotline at (309) 341-5238 or
