Senator Mike Jacobs (D-Moline) is sponsoring legislation that will standardize the practice of allowing veterans have four days off a year to seek treatment from veterans’ hospitals.

“This legislation will benefit veterans throughout Illinois,” said Senator Jacobs.  “Veterans’ hospitals are not as always easily accessible, and if a veteran needs to travel or needs extra time to receive treatment, they should be allowed to do that without penalty.”

House Bill 5006 will allow a veteran, who works for the Secretary of State, to be allowed four days per year to visit a veterans’ hospital for examination of any disabilities they may have received in connection with their military service. This bill is necessary to bring the Secretary of State’s Office into compliance with other state agencies.

Currently, the Secretary of State’s Office allows two days off to visit a veterans’ hospital without penalty.
