Fill the funding void

Ashlee Boers

Dear Editor,

I stand in support of an initiative on the upcoming primary ballot which will boost the local sales tax by one-percent in Rock Island County. The proceeds of this one-percent sales tax will help local school districts fund needed capital improvement projects. (None of the money goes to programs or salaries.) The reason I am supporting this initiative is simple -- it will benefit the children of Rock Island County by providing a better learning environment. School districts in Rock Island County have a long list of unfinished capital improvements. In addition, all of the districts barely meet their requirements for maintenance. Unless better funding is put into place, our existing school buildings could fall into disrepair. Sales tax dollars generated by this initiative will help fill the funding void and take pressure off operating budgets. Please join me in supporting the children of Rock Island County by voting in favor of the Rock Island County Option School Facilities Sales tax on April 7.
