Green Dragons roll over Bulldogs, look to Carthage
There wasn't a lot of fight in the Alwood-ROWVA Bulldogs Friday night as the Aledo-Westmer Green Dragons rolled to a 41-0 victory on a rain-soaked evening.
"I'm definitely happy with the win," said Green Dragons head coach Cullen Welter after the game. "I'm pleased, but we need to be more consistent. At times we had breakdowns. We aren't going to get away with those breakdowns next week (Illini West). They have a lot of returning starters back this year and are back to being dominant."
Welter said, "I was hoping to throw a little more. I was pleased with the drive in the second half. We proved with could throw in the rain."
The two teams traded turnovers early in the contest but Aledo-Westmer got on the board midway through the first quarter.
"We have some mistakes to correct before next week," said Ethan Ball. "We came out not as crisp as we could have. Then we got into a groove. We have a long way to go."
The Green Dragons scored on a one-yard run by quarterback Brett Anderson with 5:49 remaining in the first quarter. The kick failed and Aledo-Westmer led 6-0.
"The weather was difficult," said Anderson about the continuous rain throughout the night. "We had some missed assignments. We'll have to correct that to beat Illini West."
Aledo-Westmer increased its lead to 13-0 at the end of the first quarter as Ethan Ball scored on a 17-yard run.
With 5:01 remaining in the second quarter Aledo-Westmer started a nine play scoring drive that culminated in a six-yard touchdown run by Ball. Dawson had two 15-yard runs on the drive. The conversion pass from Anderson to Mason Bush was good and Aledo led 21-0 with 1:19 remaining in the first half.
The Green Dragons weren't finished though. Jordan Willits recovered a Bulldog fumble in the last minute of the contest to set up another touchdown.
"I feel like the team is getting better each week. We had some mental lapses but we seem to come back pretty well. We have to step it up in practice next week and not have the mental lapses."
On a one-play drive Anderson hit Devon Bysinger on a 28-yard pass for a touchdown with three seconds remaining in the half. After Luke Boucher's kick Aledo-Westmer led 28-0 at the half.
In the last minute and a half of the first half the Green Dragons' lead went from 13-0 to 28-0. It took the wind out of the AlWood-ROWVA sails.
Aledo-Westmer trotted out its passing game to open the second half. Anderson completed passes to Alex Dixon, Kyle Pittman and Colton Welch on the opening drive on three consecutive plays. Anderson completed the one-yard touchdown pass to Ball for the score at the 10:24 mark. Aledo took a 34-0 lead.
The Green Dragons scored again in the fourth quarter as Max Parkinson went across the goal line on an eight-yard run to get the continuous clock moving. Dawson had runs of 19 and 27 yards to set up the touchdown.
Matt Dawson rolled up 200 yards on the ground on 17 carries and Ethan Ball added another 51 on nine carries.
Aledo-Westmer quarterback Brett Anderson completed 10 of 12 pass attempts for 110 yards and two touchdowns.
