Aledo-Westmer quarterback Brett Anderson completes seven of his 10 pass attempts against United Oct. 13.

The Aledo-Westmer Green Dragon football team improved to 6-1 Friday, Oct. 10, with a 42-14 victory over the United Red Storm. United dropped to 5-2 overall with the loss. With the victory the Green Dragons remain on a collision course with Stark County to decide the division title in Week 9. That game will be Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. in Toulon.

Early on it appeared like it was going to be a long day for the Green Dragons.

On United’s first play from scrimmage Aaron McDonald took the ball 62 yards to the Aledo-Westmer seven-yard line. McDonald later completed the scoring drive with a one-yard touchdown run. United led 6-0 at the 10:49 mark.

Aledo-Westmer answered back. On second down and 15, Brett Anderson hit tight end Devon Bysinger for a 61-yard pass down to the United eight-yard line. Matt Dawson scored on the next play and Luke Boucher’s extra point gave Aledo-Westmer a 7-6 lead at the 9:40 mark.

United came back and completed a 10-play drive. Adam Olin scored on a two-yard run and United took a 14-7 lead after Adam Olin’s conversion run. Adam Olin gained 31 yards on six carries during the drive and McDonald had a 20-yard run as well.

“I hate shootout," said Aledo-Westmer head coach Cullen Welter. “I was thinking that’s what it’s going to be.”

The Green Dragons next drive was riddled with penalties as the referee crew stuck Aledo-Westmer four times. The drive ended when the Red Storm’s Chris Olson picked off a Brett Anderson pass a the Red Storm nine yard line.

“We came in with three (defensive) different fronts. They took it to our first one,” said Welter. “We switched to the 4-4 and we played better out of that obviously.”

United’s Adam Olin was injured on the first play of the second quarter and never returned to action.

“He’s got a moderate sprain,” said United head coach Tim Engebretson. “I’d like to say it didn’t effect us but it did.”

The Green Dragon defense held and United was forced to punt from its own endzone.

“The momentum swept our way,” said Welter. “Our defense played well from that point on,” said Welter.

The Green Dragons team’s next drive from the United 41-yard line. Dawson rushed 33 yards on the next play from scrimmage. Dawson took the handoff four times in a row scoring on a three-yard run. The extra point was no good and United still led 14-13 at the 10-minute mark.

Welter said, “We thought we could move the ball offensively. They (United) are well coached and they run their offense very well.”

United’s next drive hit a wall early as McDonald was hit for a six yard loss and they were forced to punt.

Aledo-Westmer began a six play scoring drive. A holding penalty nullified a 66-yard touchdown run by Anderson putting the Green Dragons in a hold. Anderson completed a 29-yard pass to Bysinger on a second down and 23 play. Anderson scored on a 50-yard run at the 5:3 mark to give Aledo-Westmer a 19-14 edge.

The Green Dragon defense held again and Aledo-Westmer got another chance.

“We got things under control,” said United lineman Zach King. “We moved to the base 40 and that helped out.”

Anderson completed a 65-yard touchdown pass to Alex Dixon to give Aledo a 25-14 lead at the 3:01 mark. Anderson completed the conversion pass to Bysinger to give Aledo-Westmer the 27-14 lead.

The Green Dragons scored again with 1:35 remaining the half when Anderson hit Colton Welch on a 38 yard pass for a touchdown. Anderson completed the conversion pass to Dawson to give Aledo-Westmer a 35-14 lead at the half.

“They had an arsenal and we didn’t have any answer for it,” said Engebretson. “We had some letdowns. We knew we had to control the ball. We wanted to hold on to the ball and eat some clock. That’s not so good when you are behind.”

The Green Dragons completed the night’s scoring on a 14-yard touchdown run by Dawson with 5:52 remaining in the third period. “It was a running back’s dream,” said Dawson about the holes his offensive line was creating. We’ve had a great couple of weeks at practice. Overall we played really great.”

“We were connecting offensively,” said Welter, “and we stepped our defensive play up.”

Welter added, “We are starting to play our best football. I think the kids are playing with better focus.”

The Green Dragons rushed for 294 yards on 41 carries.

Matt Dawson led Aledo with 107 yards rushing on 14 attempts. Brett Anderson rushed for 59 yards on five carries. Bryson Johnson rushed for 38 yards on five carries. Ethan ball had 32 yards rushing on four carries. Max Parkinson had 31 yards rushing on four carries.
