Green Dragons beat the Heat
The Aledo-Westmer Green Dragons improved to 7-1 with a 40-14 victory over West Central Friday, Oct. 14. West Central fell to 1-7 with the loss. They will finished season next Friday against North Fulton.
“They are where we want to be,” said West Central head coach Steve Arnold about the Green Dragons.
“We wanted to sustain some drives tonight and just couldn’t do it.”
The Heat started off with the football but Heat quarterback Dylan Hill fumbled and the ball was scooped up by Green Dragon Colton Welch at the West Central 36-yard line.
“I was happy with our defense,” said Aledo Head coach Cullen Welter. “I thought we were inconsistent offensively. We wanted to focus and get off to a good start. We need to play with more consistency.
Green Dragon Matt Dawson scored on a 21-yard run at the 8:25 mark. Aledo led 6-0 after the conversion run failed.
“We started a little slow but then we picked it up. We wanted to come out fast,” said Dawson.
The two teams traded possessions and West Central’s Tyler Link picked off a Brett Anderson pass at the 28-yard line.
The Green Dragon defense held and Aledo-Westmer led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.
With 10:23 remaining in the second quarter Green Dragon Ethan Ball scored on a four yard run up the middle of the Heat defense and Aledo Led 13-0.
West Central’s next drive ended when Josh Schau recovered a Heat fumble.
Dawson scored from three yards out to give Aledo a 20-0 lead at the 7:22 mark.
The West Central offense couldn’t get rolling on offense in the first half.
Dawson’s 49-yard run set up a first and goal situation. Anderson threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Devon Bysinger to give Aledo-Westmer a 26-0 lead which they carried into halftime.
“Bysinger had some nice catches and I thought we ran the ball well,” said Welter.
Arnold added, “Defensively, their speed had a lot to do with our inability to tackle.”
Green Dragon Michael McClellan returned the second half kickoff 72 yards for a touchdown to give Aledo-Westmer a 33-0 lead.
The West Central picked up a first down on their next drive successfully converting on fourth down and five play. Ryan Mowder faked punting the ball heaving it underhand over the line of scrimmage where Dalton Johnson made a one-handed grab and came down with it for the first down.
The Heat’s success was short lived as Green Dragon dropped Bell for a four-yard loss to force West Central to punt again pinning Aledo-Westmer at their own 16-yard line.
Green Dragon quarterback Brett Anderson went to work in he air completing passes to Colton Welch for 13 and 22 yards. He hit Devon Bysinger for a 19-yard pickup and Welch again for 16 yards. Dawson scored on a fourth down and three play from the 23-yard line to give Aledo-Westmer a 40-0 lead with 5:14 remaining in the third quarter.
“We wanted to work on our passing game tonight,” said Welter.
Dawson rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries to lead the Green Dragons.
West Central’s offense got on track with the next drive. Bell completed third down passes for 15 and seven yards. Johnson scored on a six yard run with 8:30 remaining completing a 13-play drive.
West Central managed another score late in the contest. Tyler Link’s 54-yard run set up a two yard score by Link with 50.5 seconds remaining.
“It wasn’t our greatest game,” said linebacker Jordan Frieden. “We are playing with more consistency. We need to come out more fired up.”
The Green Dragons will travel to Toulon Friday in a game with Stark County that will decide the conference championship.
“Next week is a big one,” said Welter. We need to get all the bugs out before the playoffs.”
