Green Dragons place 10th at Mitton Invite

The Aledo Green Dragon wrestling team placed 10th at the Bob Mitton Mitton Invitational in Orion Jan. 23 and 24. Ethan Ball, at 152 pounds was Aledo’s only individual champion.  Buoyed by eight top-four finishes, the Macomb High wrestling team captured the title.

The Bombers topped the field with 171 1/2 points, edging Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher, who finished second overall with 163 1/2 points. Oregon was third (156 points), followed by Normal University High (146), Kewanee High (144), Riverdale (121 1/2), Erie/Prophetstown (119) and Central/Southeastern (112). Rounding out the field was Dakota (99 1/2), Aledo-Westmer (94), Orion (92), Ashton-Franklin Center (78), Sherrard (66), Monmouth-Roseville (51 1/2), Polo/Eastland/Milledgeville (32) and Rockridge (21).

The Green Dragons had one first place finish, one second place finish and one person place fourth, fifth and sixth at the tournament.

At 112 pounds Aledo’s Austin Skiles earned a first round bye before pinning Seth Williams of Rockridge in 52 seconds and beating Drew Todino, 10-7 of Normal U of the semifinals He was pinned by Thorian Twyner of Orion in 3:03.

At 125 pounds Aledo’s Derrick Morford pinned Chance Stewart in 2:53 beforle losing to Drew Balzer of Camp Point 14-3. In the Consolation Bracket Morford pinned Sherrard’s Hank Gustafson in 3:44 and beat Thomas Lee of Oregon, 11-1. He beat Ross Bruckner of Gibson City, 5-2 before getting pinned in the third place match by Balzer, in 5:50.

At 145 pounds Kolby Smith beat Brett Hollowell of Oregon, 13-2 before losing to Alex Bee of Normal U High, 2-1. In the Consolation Bracket Smith pinned Tyler Massey of Riverdale in 43 seconds; beat Rico Salazar of Monmouth-Roseville, 3-0 before losing to Brian Elliott of Macomb , 1-0. Bee beat Smith, 7-5 in the fifth place match.

At 152 pounds Aledo’s Ethan Ball won the individual championship. Ball received a first round bye before pinning Zach Nohns of Normal U High in 4:48; beating Danny Gale of Oregon, 11-1 and Stephan Birt of Gibson City, 5-3 in the championship.

At 285 pounds Aledo’s Derek King pinned Rockridge’s Steve Sieghartner in 37 seconds before getting pinned by Polo’s Jake Peterson in 33 seconds. In the consolation bracket King beat Jeff Gonzalez of Oregon by forfeit; pinned Dalton Hays of Camp Point in 46 seconds and was pinned by Mitchell Keppy of Riverdale in 3:35. King pinned Brandon Cousins of Macomb in the fifth place match in 3:33.

Sherrard had one individual place second and one place fourth, fifth and sixth.

At 140 pounds Sherrard’s Derek Mizaur received a first round by before pinning Macomb’s Charles Whitaker in 1:25 and beating Colby Vance of Riverdale, 13-7. Mizaur was pinned in the finals by Gage Merritt in 4:36.

At 171 pounds Seth Whan of Sherrard pinned Grant Killinger of Riverdale in 1:20 and Beat Caleb Staub of Dakota, 6-3. Whan lost to Ryan McWethy of Oregon, 14-2. In the Consolation Bracket Phillip Norton of Macomb beat Whan, 8-7. In the fifth place match Whan beat Staub, 4-3.

At 215 pounds Nathan Steele beat Joe Keig of Riverdale, 13-4 before losing to Ben Bruns of Oregon, 9-1. In the Consolation Bracket Steele pinned Cory Dennis of Rockridge in 2:09; beat Tim Stahl of Dakota, 9-5 and David Amlong of Orion by forfeit. Steele was pinned in the third place match in 4:49 by Marselle Dunn of Kewanee.

Rockridge had one fifth place finish. At 103 pounds Jake Miller beat Sherrard’s Ricky Vanderham, 12-7 in the fifth place match.
