Newman Catholic stops Sherrard, 9-6

SHERRARD -- Newman Catholic defeated Sherrard 9-6 in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs Saturday.

While the statistics all lined up in favor of the Tigers, Sherrard turned the ball over four times in the contest, and that turned out to be the difference.

Sherrard racked up 319 yards of total offense while limiting Newman Catholic to only 93. Logan Frye completed 14 of his 27 pass attempts for 263 yards. C.J. Bjustrom caught six passes for 116 yards. Inman caught three passes for 88 yards. Mitch Heiar caught three passes for 48 yards.

Miller led the Tigers in rushing with 36 yards.

Newman Catholic scored early in the contest on a one-yard touchdown run by Wilson to give Newman Catholic a 6-0 lead with 5:56 remaining in the first quarter.

Sherrard answered back in the second quarter with a three-yard scoring run by Nate Brieby with 9:59 remaining before the half.

Newman Catholic's Blessman kicked a 20-yard field goal with 2:07 remaining in the third quarter to give them a 9-6 lead which would hold up the rest of the game.

Sherrard finished the season with an 8-2 record and was the Olympic Conference Champion.
