Women finish second at Viking Olympics with one individual and two

Augustana picked up one individual and two relay wins this weekend to claim second place at the Vikings Olympics. Katie Ries (Regina HS Iowa City, Iowa) won the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 12:47.69. Northern Illinois won the team title with 225 points while the Vikings finished with 178.

Augustana also got wins in the 4x100 shuttle hurdle and 4x800 relays. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Amy Walsh (Cary- Grove HS, Cary, Ill.), Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa), Emily Margosian (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), Karly Losch (Pittsfield HS, Pittsfield, Ill.) finished in 1:07.63 and the 4x800 unit consisting of Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.), Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.), Meaghan Reaney (Lincoln- Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.), Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.) ran a 9:44.32.

Walsh and Smith, along with Theresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.) earned second place finishes. Walsh ran a 1:08.70 in the 400 hurdles. Smith finished the 100 hurdles in :16.00 and Coverick ran an 18:40.87 at 5000 meters. Heifner and Tara Bistry (Joliet Catholic HS, Shorewood, Ill.) also scored points in the 5000. Heifner finished sixth in 19:15.28 and Bistry was seventh with a time of 19:15.77.

Anita Maurer (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and Amanda Pease (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) finished third and fourth behind Ries in the steeplechase, finishing in 13:04.42 and 13:16.50, respectively. In the 1500, Jones and Hottle were third and fourth. Jones ran a 4:59.02 and Hottle a 5:04.62. Reaney claimed third in the 800 with 2:24.74 clocking. Morgan Gale was a third-place finisher in the pole vault, clearing 8' 6", while teammates Ella Mathieson (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) and Taylor Tjardes (Gibson City/Melvin-Sibley HS, Gibson City, Ill.) went 8' 6" and 7' 6", respectively to finish fifth and eighth. Mathieson also went 16' 1⁄4" in the long jump to finish ninth.

Freshman Johanna Schnitzler (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) finished fourth in the heptathlon, compiling 3,030 points. Devon White's (Indian Creek HS, DeKalb, Ill.) fourth-place 106' toss of the javelin led four Viking point- winners in the event. Cat Foreman (St. Joseph-Ogden HS, St. Joseph, Ill.) was fifth with a mark of 103'. Julia Popp (Rockford Boylan HS, Belvidere, Ill.) and Megan Garvey (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) finished seventh and eighth, throwing 71' 1" and 60' 10", respectively.

Bethany Siwek (Woodstock HS, Woodstock, Ill.) threw the hammer 124' 2" to earn a fourth-place finish, while Amber Gruber (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) was ninth with a heave of 109' 3". The 4x400 relay team of Losch, Reaney, Jones and Schnitzler also finished fourth in 4:17.35.

In the high jump, Garvey, Jennifer Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Megan Lecander (Sherrard HS, Sherrard, Ill.) cleared 4' 9", 4' 5" and 4' 31⁄4", respectively to finish fifth, sixth and eighth.The 4x200 relay team of Brittney Bennett (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.), Gale, Bach and Smith finished fifth in 1:56.45, while Bach, Gale, Losch and Foreman were sixth in the 4x100 in a time of :53.28.

Siwek, Gruber and Melanie Battistoni (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) finished seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively in the discus. Siwek threw 106' 6" while Gruber recorded a mark of 103' 11" and Battistoni 103' 6". Losch, with a :17.27 in the 100- meter hurdles, and Bach, with a :13.71 in the 100, earned points with ninth-place finishes.

Central finished third in the team standings with 162 points, followed by St. Ambrose (150.5), Ashford (94), Clarke (85), Culver-Stockton (24), College of DuPage (19) and Dubuque (13.5).

Augustana will be competing in the Wartburg Select meet in Waverly, Iowa on Saturday, April 2 beginning at 11:00 a.m.
