Golden Eagles hold off Rebels, 14-10

The Mercer County Golden Eagles football team defeated Stark County 14-10 Friday night. It was a game full of penalties. The Golden Eagles had two touchdowns called back during the contest.

It was also a game of turnovers as Golden Eagle Zeke Snyder's interception set up Mercer County's first touchdown and Tyson Nylin's interception at the end of the contest put the game in the bag.

After kicking off to Stark County Snyder made the interception on the first series of the evening. The Golden Eagles turned it into six quick points. Russell scored from three yards out at 9:23 to give Mercer County the 6-0 lead.

Stark County answered right back though.

The Golden Eagles got hit with a 15 yard penalty that gave the Rebels a first down instead of forcing a fourth down. A second Mercer County penalty gave the Rebels a first down at Mercer County's three yard line. The Rebels took advantage as Colton Senders scored on a three yard run. The extra point gave the Rebels a 7-6 lead with 5:11 in the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles would score again early in the second quarter. Mercer County went on an eight play 80 yard drive. Tyson Russell had consecutive runs of 13, 21 and 18 yards on the drive. Wood scored on a two yard quarterback sneak. Wood then completed the two point conversion pass to Tyson Nylin to give Mercer County a 14-7 lead at the 8:55 mark.

Russell came up with another interception for Mercer County at the Stark County 28 yard line

Stark County's defense stopped the Golden Eagles as Wood's pass on fourth down fell incomplete.

Near the end of the second quarter officials called back a 65 yard run by Russell. Stark County hung on to keep the Golden Eagles out of scoring range. ThRebel Jake Goodman sacked Wood for an 11 yard loss on the drive.

The Golden Eagle offense couldn't get going in the third quarter as penalties hindered the team's first two drives.

Stark County got back on the board midway through the third period. On third down and 10 Rebel quarterback Ryan Daum connected with Jake Berchtold for 35 yards down to the Golden Eagle nine yard line.

The Golden Eagle defense held but the Rebels hit a field goal to cut the Mercer County lead to 14-10.

The Golden Eagle offense got moving again late in the third quarter with runs of 13 yards by Curtis VanWinkle, 14 yards by Russell and 15 by Wood. The Golden Eagles drove to the Stark County seven yard line where again a touchdown was called back due to a penalty.

Stark County started to move the ball better in the fourth quarter driving down to the Golden Eagle 20 yard lie before getting stopped three yard shore of the first down on a fourth down play where the snap got away from the Rebel Quarterback.

The Golden Eagles ended the Rebel rally when Tyson Nylin came up with the interception at the Mercer County eight yard line with 1:18 left in the contest.
