Golden Eagles season comes to an end

The Mercer County Golden Eagles girls basketball season came to an end Monday night Feb. 10 in Biggsville. The West Central Heat beat the Golden Eagles 45-34 in the first game of the West Central regional. The Heat advance to play top seeded Sherrard in the second round of the regional Tuesday night Feb. 11.

The Heat never trailed in the game. West Central scored the first six points before Bailey Swanson got the Golden eagles on the board with a three pointer. Kenzie Baker's basket closed the Heat's lead to one point at 6-5 but West Central went on a 10-2 run to close the first period with a 16-7 lead.

Points were hard to come by in the second period as only nine were scored. West Central led 22-10 at the half.

Mercer County went on a 6-1 run early in the third quarter to cut the West Central lead to nine points with 3:40 remaining but the Heat went on a 9-3 run to close the third period with a 15 point lead, 34-19.

Baskets from Kenzie Baker, Emily Lower and Emily Weeks started the fourth quarter and cut the Heat's lead to nine points, 34-25.

A pair of free throws from Kristin Heath cut the Heat's lead to eight points with 4:03 remaining. The Golden Eagles actually had a chance to cut into the Heat's lead further but couldn't hold it together. A basket from Savanna Pulse and free throws from Catie Steck, Madeline Brent and Joni Lafary keyed a 6-0 run in the final minutes that put the game away.

Scoring for Mercer County were: Bridget Anderson, six; Kristin Heath, five; Kenzie Baker and Ellie Lower, four; Bailey Swanson and Michaela Baker, three; Emily Lower, Emily Weeks and Hannah Callahan, two and Rashida Juma, one.

Scoring for West Central were: Cierra Pulse, 15; Joni Lafary and Savanna Pulse, nine; Catie Steck, eight and Madeline Brent and Monica Brooks, two.
