Sherrard wrestling team moves to state

The Sherrard High School wrestling team advance to state Tuesday night with a convincing 42-21 victory over the Rockford Lutheran in the Rock Falls Team Sectional.

"This is our first trip to state. We lost here to Stillman Valley in 2011 by two points. We want to make some noise on Saturday and bring home a trophy."

The Tigers will face Leroy at 11 a.m on Saturday at the State Farm Center in Champaign.

"We've seen them wrestle at the St. Thomas More tournament. They've got a good squad," said Garrett.

The Tigers quickly built a 14-3 lead after four matches and never looked back.

Sherrard head coach Jeff Garrett moved some wrestlers around in effort to gain an advantage over Rockford Lutheran and it seemed to work.

Garrett inserted Clayton Bloomfield at 126 moving state qualifier Chance Teel to 132 pounds and Alex Morley to 138 pounds. He also switched Junior Zane Viernow from 195 to 220 and freshman Jacob Laatsch from 220 to 195.

Viernow's match was the most exciting of the night as he trailed 8-1 after two periods but came back to win 9-8.

"The win at 220 pounds was huge for us. We were hoping not to get pinned and came up with the victory. Their 106 pound kid was a state qualifier and they didn't get a pin their. At 113 pounds Hunter Spengler did a good job. Jacob Hast did a great job tonight."

"We wanted to avoid the (Caleb) Micho kid. We sent one of our junior varsity wrestlers out to face him(Clayton Bloomfield)," said Garrett. That move allowed Chance Teel to wrestle at 132 pounds where he earned a pin.

"Everybody did a great job tonight," said Garrett. "I'm very proud of the guys."

At 152 pounds Connor Waugh (RL) beat Isaac Goldner (S) 6-0.

At 160 pounds Nathan Miller (S) scored a major victory over Tanner Haugen(RL), 17-3.

At 170 pounds Dylan Mizaur (S) won a major victory over Sweeney(RL), 14-0.

At 182 pounds Jon Stoops (S) pinned Elias Fambro (RL) in 48 seconds.

At 195 pounds Austin Barnhart (RL) pinned Jacob Laatsch (S) in 40 seconds.

At 220 pounds Zane Viernow (S) beat Joey Harezlak (RL) 9-8.

At 285 pounds Ben Corlett (S) won by forfeit.

At 106 pounds Luke Wallace (RL) beat Taylor Humphrey (S) 3-0.

At 113 pounds Hunter Spengler (S)scored a major victory over Zac Schrank (RL), 11-2.

At 120 pounds Jacob Hast (S) beat Austin Grant (RL) 2-1.

At 126 pounds Caleb Micho (RL) pinned Clayton Bloomfield (S) in 1:59.

At 132 pounds Chance Teel (S) pinned Mike Martin (RL) at 1:28.

At 138 pounds Ballinger (RL) beat Alex Morley (S) 10-6.

At 145 pounds Sam Ryner (S) pinned Tucker (RL) in 59 seconds.
