Sherrard grad Anderson named pitcher of the week in the CCIW

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Augustana won both the pitcher and hitter of the week awards from the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, it was announced today for the week ending March 2. Senior leftfielder Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) was picked as the “Hitter of the Week” while junior Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) was named the “Pitcher of the Week”. Both players were instrumental in the Vikings going 5-0 in first week of spring break trip to Clermont, Florida.

Behnke batted .353 with six hits in 17 at-bats with six runs scored and eight runs-batted-in. She had two doubles, one triple and one home run. She had a .765 slugging percentage for the week.

She had a hit, scored a run and collected at least one RBI in four of the five games. She went two for three with two runs and three RBI in an 8-0 shutout of Lyndon State on February 26. She was also two for four with one run scored and two RBI in an 8-5 win over College of St. Benedict on March 1.

Anderson tossed two complete game victories for the Vikings last week. She went 2-0 with a 3.00 earned run average with 12 strikeouts and four walks in 14 innings pitched. Opponents batted .241 against her.

She scattered seven hits with four strikeouts over seven innings during a 7-2 win against Alma on February 26. She came back on March 1 and once again went seven innings in an 8-5 win over College of St. Benedict. Anderson allowed six hits with eight strikeouts.

For good measure she batted .357 with five hits in 14 at-bats with one run scored and two RBI. She also had 10 putouts and two assists in the field without an error.

Augustana, which was ranked 20th in the pre-season NCAA Division III poll, is currently 5-0 on the season.
