Sherrard knocks off United

The Sherrard High School girls softball team knocked off United on Saturday, April 10, 2-1.

The game was scheduled late last week and featured two of the region’s better teams.

The game was scoreless throughout the first five innings.

Sherrard struck first in the top of the sixth inning. Ward reached base on an error. She moved over to second base on a sacrifice by Kelly Hornick. Ward scored on a single by Patterson.

United answered back in the bottom of the sixth innng. Katie Bertelsen led off the inning with a single. Augusta Chandler sacrificed her over to second base. Kaitlyn Winkler’s two-out single tied the score at one apiece. Winkler had three hits on the day. Katie Kaywood followed with a single. Alex Fell then singled but Winkler was thrown out at the plate trying to score the go-ahead run.

In the top of the seventh inning Tarran Shaffer led off with a walk. Megan Kissner followed with a single. But the Tigers couldn’t push anyone across stranding both runners.

Gina Long and Sommer Foster reached base in the top of the seventh but couldn’t score.

Sherrard broke through in the top of the eighth inning. Ward led off the inning with a double. Kelly Hornick moved her over to third base with a sacrifice. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Patterson.
