The Mercer County Golden Eagles advanced to the second round of the Aledo Regional Tuesday, May 18 with an 12-3 victory over the Monmouth-Roseville Titans.

The Titans had an opportunity to lengthen their lead in the top of the third by loading the bases.

Mercer County Coach Darryl Bewley said,”I went to the mound and Molly (Conway) told me “I got nothing. The ball’s not moving.’”

Bewley told her, “A lot of pitchers win when they don’t have their best stuff.’

Conway got out of the inning and only allowed one more run the rest of the way.

The Golden Eagle bats came alive in the bottom of the third inning.

Kellogg and Emma Downey led off the inning with singles and scored on a triple by Morgan Weeks. Weeks scored on a sacrifice by Ruh. The Golden Eagles added two more runs after Emily Heard and Taylor Bennett each reach base followed by a Brittany DeFrieze double. Mercer County led 6-2 by the end of the inning.

The Titans scored again in the fifth inning. Taylor Woods reached base on an error and scored on a single by Kara Abbott. The run cut the Golden Eagles lead to 6-3.

Mercer County broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning with six runs on five hits. Bennett doubled and DeFrieze walked right behind her. Kimmi Nelson drove both home with a triple. A single by Molly Dietmeier scored Nelson. Downey followed with an RBI single and scored on Weeks’ second triple of the game. Weeks scored on a past ball to round out the Golden Eagles’ scoring.

The Golden Eagles will face Sherrard, the regional’s top seed Wednesday, May 19 at 7 p.m.
