Illini West tops Rockridge, 36-8

At Fuzz Berges Field in Carthage, the Chargers led just 8-0 at the break, but scored three times in the third quarter to grab control of this West Central Conference contest Sept. 3.

Zane Schmudlach's 1-yard run and conversion run gave the state's top-ranked team in Class 3A an 8-0 lead with 3:43 left before halftime. Drake Schmudlach's 28-yard TD run and PAT run doubled the IWHS (2-0, 2-0) advantage to 16-0 in the opening three minutes of the second half.

Ser Whitaker added scoring runs of 25 and 1-yard within a three-minute span later in the period that pushed the margin to 30-0. Kayden Guymon's 49-yard run in the opening minute of the fourth period closed out the scoring for the Chargers.

Rockridge (1-1, 1-1) got its lone score on Dakota Peterson's 63-yard run with just over three minutes remaining.

Illini West finished with 360 yards of total offense, 291 coming by rush on 46 carries. Whitaker finished with 123 yards on 14 carries, while Kyle Huss added 92 yards on 14 carries.

Defensively, Chris Beaver recorded nine total tackles, including seven solo stops. Jack Carlisle also had nine total tackles, including six solo stops, while Drake Schmudlach had five solo tackles, including three for-loss.

Rockridge finished with 188 yards of total offense, 172 coming on the ground in 36 carries. Jeremy McManus recorded 107 yards on 23 carries.
