Golden Eagles fall in three games

 While the Golden Eagles were behind in all three games, they still nearly pulled out the victory against Annawan Wednesday night.

"We made too many mistakes," said Mercer County head coach Katie Jenkins after the match. That's part of what we do, somedays we implode, others its a battle." It was a battle Wednesday. "We made too many mistakes. They picked up everything we were hitting. They were spreading us thin in the back row and it was tough to defend."  

Annawan won 25-15, 23-25 and 26-24.

Mercer County fell to 9-11 overall with the loss and were 5-3 in conference play. Annawan improved to 12-14 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

Annawan scored the first four points of the first game and led 8-3 when Jenkins called her first timeout. The Golden Eagles never got going offensively in the game and fell 25-15.

In the second game The Golden eagles stayed with Annawan in the early goings taking a 7-6 lead.

But Annawan came back surging out to leads of 14-9 and 20-13.

But Mercer County fought back behind the serving of Rachel Hawk and Hannah Kirkhove and cut the Annawan lead to 21-17 forcing the Bravettes to call a timeout.

The Golden Eagles continued their surge behind the hitting of Bailey Krstic and C.J. Milewski and took 24-23 lead.

The Bravettes appeared to tie the score at 24 but were caught serving out of order giving Mercer County the final point of the game.

Mercer County dug themselves a hole early in the third game falling behind 8-2, 14-5 and 18-10 before clawing their way back into the match.

Terrill served up four straight points as the Golden Eagles cut the Bravettes lead to 18-14.

The Bravettes scored two more points to take a 20-14 lead. Annawan led 24-19 when Mercer County made its last surge. Hannah Kirkhove's four points tied the match at 24 but the Golden Eagles comeback ended there A Golden Eagle ball hit the ground just beyond the out of bounds mark giving the Bravette's their 25th point of the match and turning the tide against the comeback.

Bailey Krstic led the Golden Eagles with 11 kills and five blocks. Kimi Nelson added seven kills and two blocks. C.J. Milewski had five kills.

Maggy Terrill had 15 assists. Hanah Kirkhove had seven digs. Kirkhove had seven points including three aces. Nelson also had five points.
