Members of the Mercer County High School boys and girls cross country teams hold up a few of the trophies the groups have won this year. They will compete at the Macomb Regional Saturday Oct. 22.

The Mercer County Golden Eagles cross country team hit the ground running when the season started and haven't slowed down.

"Both the boys and girls teams placed first at Farmington," said head coach Rita Greenspan. It was the first meet of the season. "We kind of surprised some people there."

The team continued its run at the Prime Beef run where the girls placed first and the boys second.

At the Princeton Invite, which is a large invite, the girls placed second.

The girls placed first and the boys second at both the Macomb and Monmouth-Roseville invitational.

At the Rocket Booster Invite the girls placed first and the boys second.

The girls added another second place finish at the Elmwood Invite.

The girls placed sixth and the boys 10th at the Bureau Valley Invite but it was against the best teams in the state.

The girls took home the conference title at Monmouth while the boys placed second.

The girls finished up their invites with a fourth place finish at Peoria Heights Invite, a competition that drew 50 schools.

"The Peoria Heights meet was on the same course used at the state meet," said Greenspan. "We've ran on the courses for regionals, sectionals and state. We have knowledge of all these courses."

The teams are senior heavy with Miranda Biddle who has led the girls all year and Sam Whan Who has led the boys. "Christina McKnight cut a minute and a half off of her time at Peoria," said Greenspan. She finished right behind Miranda."

Both the boys and girls teams will travel to Macomb on Saturday, Oct. 22 for the regional there.
