EAST MOLINE, Ill. — Jace Guthmiller of Yankton, S.D., leads the Boys Division after carding a 4-under-par 68 in the first round of the AJGA Junior at Quad Cities. In the Girls Division, Julie Yang of Apache Junction, Ariz., shot a 1-under-par 71 the lead by three strokes.

The AJGA Junior at Quad Cities is a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at the Short Hills Country Club in East Moline, Ill. The tournament field consists of 35 girls and 96 boys, ages 12-18, from Ontario and Brazil and 23 states, including 48 from Illinois. The Boys Division played the par-72 course 6,694 yards and the Girls Division played at 6,123 yards.

Guthmiller started hot with two birdies in the first six holes. He continued his strong play on the back nine with three birdies to offset his two bogies on the day.

“I like the course,” Guthmiller said. “I played really well. I hit a lot of greens, and you can’t really go wrong when you do that. Hopefully I can do well the rest of the week.”

Kyle Sterbinsky of Yardley, Pa., and Andrew Bieber of Shaker Heights, Ohio, are tied for second at 3-under-par 69. Joe Willis of Lake Forest, Ill., sits in fourth with a 2-under-par 70. Rounding out the top five in a three-way tie for fifth is Ryan Medhaug of Veblen, S.D., Sean Kozak of Algonquin, Ill., and Sameer Kalia of Campbellville, Ontario at 1-under-par 71.

In the Girls Division, Yang has a commanding lead heading into the second round. After finishing the front nine 1-over-par 37, she countered on the back nine with three birdies and five pars. When she was 13 years old, she won the John Deere Classic Junior Open at the Glynns Creek Golf Course in Long Grove, Iowa.  Now 16 years old and coming back off of tours throughout Europe, she is looking to stay composed and steady throughout the rest of the championship.

“This course isn’t very long at 6,100 yards, but it’s got some risk-reward holes,” Yang said. “It makes it more of a thinking golf course. The rough in particular is quite challenging, very sticky and long.”

Morgan Gonzalez of Chandler, Ariz., sits in second place at 2-over-par 74. In a tie for third at 3-over-par 75 is Julia Calbi of South Barrington, Ill., and Yvonne Zheng of Bradenton, Fla. In a tie for fifth, Dana Gattone of Addison, Ill., and Evelyn Dole of Raleigh, N.C. finished the first round with a 4-over-par 76.

Second round tee times for the AJGA Junior at Quad Cities are from 7 – 8:40 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees.
