KNOXVILLE — The Knoxville Blue Bullets boys basketball team went 27-6 and claimed an undefeated Lincoln Trail Conference championship last season.

Repeating that performance might not be easy for 2022-2023.

"We have experience, but we're not very deep," said Knoxville coach Erik Hughes, starting his sixth season.

"We have only eight juniors and seniors out this year.

"Depth could be a weakness but we're going to be long and athletic."

Knoxville lost key players David Hise and Kellen McClay to graduation.

Expected to assume leadership spots this season are seniors Braden Downs, Beau Honeycutt and junior Will Schreeves.

The Bullets hope to be in the mix for another LTC title but there will be challenges.

"We can contend for a conference championship but teams like Mercer County and United are always good," said Hughes.

"I would say Mercer County is probably the best team in the conference this year."

Knoxville is scheduled to open the season in the Brimfield Thanksgiving Tournament this week.

Following an opener against Midwest Central on Tuesday, the Bullets are scheduled to play Tremont at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Princeville at 5 p.m. Friday and Brimfield at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Highlights on the Knoxville schedule include a trip to the Effingham-Teutopolis Christmas Classic Tournament.
