Streaks' Cantarini takes 10th, Knoxville's King 14th in Galesburg Cross Country meet

GALESBURG — Morton High School boys and Dunlap High School girls won first place among boys and girls varsity in the Silver Streaks Cross Country Invitational Saturday at Lake Storey in Galesburg.

Galesburg High School Junior Dominic Cantarini was Galesburg’s top finisher, running the three-mile course in 16:57. That time landed Cantarini 10th in a field of 145 boys varsity runners. 

Boys varsity runners start the three-mile race Saturday at the Galesburg Cross Country Invitational  at Lake Storey. Morton High School landed the top spot against 13 schools who fielded boys varsity teams. In all, 19 schools participated.

Galesburg boys and girls runners competed Saturday against 19 teams: Alleman, Dunlap, East Peoria, Geneseo, Knoxville, Metamora, Morton, Dixon, Ridgewood, Sterling, Normal West, Peoria Notre Dame, Abingdon-Avon, United Township, United (Monmouth), Annawan-Wethersfield, ROWVA/Williamsfield and Fort Madison.

Morton had four runners in the top 10 boys finishers. Josh Weeks (15:51), Chase Saunder (16:24), Yonas Wuthrich (16:50) and Nicholas Delgado (16:55). That helped Morton varsity boys win the invitational Saturday. Dunlap High School took second and Sterling High School was third. Galesburg took ninth out of the 13 schools who fielded a varsity boys team. 

Sterling’s Dale Johnson was the overall top finisher with a time of 15:36 Saturday in a field of 145 runners. Johnson won last year’s Galesburg invite with a time of 16:09.

Max Martinez had the second best time among Galesburg runners completing the course in 18:22. He shaved some time off his 18:46 finish at the invitational in 2021. He finished 38th overall. Other top five Galesburg runners were: Caidan Kogut - 19:20 (62nd), Primo Moreno - 19:38 (65th) and Michael Patrick - 20:12 (78th).

Mia Carlson topped Galesburg High School girls varsity runners with a time of 23:03.

Dunlap takes top honors in girls varsity

Dunlap took first place among the 10 schools who fielded a girls varsity team, followed by Normal (Community West) and Morton. Galesburg didn’t field a full girls team. 

The top girls varsity runner Saturday was Kennady Anderson of Kewanee (Wethersfield) with an 18:39. Emily King of Knoxville took 14th out of 123 runners with a time of 20:13. Her teammate Alyssa Higgins finished with a 20:51 (22nd). Mia Carlson topped Galesburg runners with a time of 23:03.
