The Mercer County Golden Eagles thumped West Central Friday night, 47-12.

Mercer County improved to 2-0 with the victory while the Heat fell to 1-1. Mercer County will face United next week.

While the margin of victory was large it was the number of penalties his team committed that was on Golden Eagle head coach Nat Zunkel's mind after the game. "We had eight penalties, two that brought back touchdowns. That's not acceptable."

Zukel added, "I am excited to be 2-0 at this point in the season. We do need to get better. We've got to do the little things that makes a team successful."

It was a big night for Zach Nelson as he came away with four touchdowns on the night.

Nelson got the Eagles on the board first with a seven yard touchdown run at the 8:56 mark.

The Heat answered back later in the period as West Central quarterback Trey Goff threw a 68 yard touchdown pass to Kevin Burgus at the 2:01 mark.

"We got off to a bit of a slow start tonight," admitted Mercer County quarterback Tanner Matlick. "We need to get better.

Logan Snyder gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good at the 9:07 mark in the second period. Logan scored on a three yard run

Mercer County scored again at the five minute mark. Jesse Snyder ran 31 yards before fumbling and picking up the ball and scoring with it from three yard out.

Less than two minutes later the Golden Eagles scored again. A.J. Line blocked a Heat punt setting up Zach Nelson's 11 yard touchdown run.

"They didn't handle the punt well and I just set my foot and got the block."

Mercer County led 27-6 at the half.

The Heat took the ball to start the second hall. A tackle for a loss from Chris Neeld and a sack by Bobby Lincoln forced West Central to punt.

Following the blocked punt Tanner Matlick hooked up with Tyson Nylin for a 44 yard pick up. Zach Nelson scored on the next play from 12 yards out and Mercer County led 33-6.

The two teams exchanged possessions prior to Nelson's fourth touchdown run of the day, a 10 yard run. The Golden Eagles led 40-6.

"The line was just doing their job. The line was making huge holes for me today. Everybody knew we could pass before, now they know we can run to."

Jesse Snyder scored again on a 25 yard run with 9:08 remaining in the contest giving the Golden Eagles a 47-6 lead.

The Heat tacked on a touchdown late as Andy Lewis scored on a one yard run.

Jesse Snyder led the Golden Eagles in rushing with 86 yards and two touchdowns.

Logan Snyder had 77 yards rushing. Nelson ended the night with four touchdowns and 76 yards rushing.

Matlick completed six of his 11 pass attempts for 115 yards.
