Golden Eagles shutout West Central

The Mercer County Golden Eagle defense shut out West Central 28-0 Friday night and improved to 2-0 on the season.

"We've got to get better," said Golden Eagle head coach Nat Zunkel after the game. "We are better than what we played."

Zunkel added, "From the way we practiced this week I though we were going to take off but we didn't.

While the offense struggled at times the defense remained sharp. "They had some success with the screen pass," admitted Zunkel. "They are not an awful football team. but right now they are 0-2. I definitely liked what we did on defense."

The Golden Eagles got in the scoreboard with 3:08 remaining in the first quarrier on a five yard touchdown pass from Spencer Wood to Tyson Nylin. The touchdown was the culmination of a six play 33 yard drive that started after the Golden Eagles forced a turnover.

The Heat bared down after that keeping the Golden Eagles out of the endzone for the rest of the fist half.

The Golden eagles ooh the ball to start the third quarter and scored on a seven play 60 yard drive on a 45 yard run by Tyson Russell. With 8:23 remaining Mercer County led 14-0.

On the second play of the Heat's next drive Golden Eagle Buddy Show came up with a West Central fumble.

Mercer County led 14-0 entering the final period.

Mercer County broke the game open early in the third quarter as Chris Neeld scored on a 65 yard run with 9:16 left in the period. Bobby Lincoln added the extra point and Mercer County led 21-0.

Mercer County added another touchdown with 2:56 remaining in the contest. Wood Completed a five yard pass to Chris Neeld on a fourth and goal situation. Curtis Van Winkle delivered the big blow against the Heat on the drive with a 40 yard run down to the Heat's 10 yard line.

Wood completed seven of 13 pass attempts for 71 yards and two touchdowns. Tyson Russell led all Mercer County running backs with 19 yards on 15 carries while Curtis Van Winkle had 68 yards on seven carries and Chris Neeld had 66 yards on two carries. Matt Weeks had 41 yards on seven carries.
