ROWVA/Williamsfield football coach Grant Gullstrand talks to his players at the end of Cougars' practice on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2022 in Oneida.

GALESBURG — Thanks to a crossover game on its schedule against a Prairieland Conference team, ROWVA/Williamsfield will face a formidable test in a bid to start the season 3-0 on Friday.

The 2-0 Cougars will host 2-0 Macomb in a 7 p.m. game having already reached their win total of last season.

R/W's enrollment is about 260 students. Macomb can count about 600 students.

"They're one of the most talented teams on our schedule," said R/W coach Grant Gullstrand. "A couple of their linemen are big and strong. They're a good football team and it will be a good test."

Cougars' recent history

R/W opened the season by beating Abingdon-Avon 42-12 and followed that by whipping Dupo 42-16 last week.

Macomb's early path

The Bombers downed Rushville 36-6 in Week 1 and South Fulton 40-6 last week.

R/W's solid foundation

"We have all juniors and seniors playing," Gullstrand said.

"In the past, we depended on sophomores and even freshmen playing for us. We've built the roster and they're ready to play."

Turnover battle success

"Our defense has done a fantastic job," said Gullstrand. "We've got 10 turnovers and only turned it over once. "That's a pretty good recipe."

Key performers

Leading the Cougars' defensive effort has been junior linebacker Gage Aldred with three interceptions and leading the team in tackles, and lineman Graham White has stood out on both sides of the ball.

Offensively, Jack Godsil has scored five touchdowns as a tight end and fullback. Bryan Bertlshofer and Jack Cordle have run the ball hard from the backfield.

Quarterback Riley Danner has thrown for 4 TDs.
