Red Storm claim conference crown

The United Red Storm won the conference title in volleyball Thursday night beating Mercer County in two games 25-23 and 25-19.

United improves to 26-6 with the victory while Mercer County ended its season with a record of 17-16.

The Red Storm advance to compete in the Sherrard Sectional Oct. 30.

"I give a lot of credit to Mercer County," said United Head Coach Carrie Boone. "This is the best Mercer County team I've seen in a log time."

Boone said, "We started off uptight. We know we have to play at a fast pace. When we started passing well we got into a flow. Cassandra Ellison did a great job for us tonight.

Mercer County head coach Amy Degelman said, "We are building this program. We are headed in the right direction. We are still a little timid on adjusting during the game. It's something we need to work on."

Degelman said, "We knew we had to pass well, dig well and we did that. Kimi Nelson had 16 digs tonight. We had to get the ball to our front players. We did that. We had 22 kills as a team. This was the best game we played all season."

Degelman added, "United is a great program. They had a great program under Donn Damos and Carrie is continuing that."

Despite the disappointing loss Degelman has a strong group of juniors coming back next year with Brooke Nelson, Michaela Baker, Kristin Heath, Bridget Anderson, Shelby Reid, Becca Askew and Whitley Frieden.
