Wrestler stays perfect to win Galesburg's first IHSA title in nearly six decades
Gauge Shipp joined an elite and very short list Saturday night.
The Galesburg junior became just the third Silver Streaks wrestler to win an Illinois High School Association state championship, completing a perfect season at State Farm Center in Champaign.
Shipp (50-0) defeated Jake Hamiti (37-16) of Joliet Catholic by technical fall to win the 138-pound bracket in Class 2A.

Shipp is Galesburg's third champ overall and first since Gene Denisar won the single-class, 154-pound title in 1964.
Shipp rolled through the previous rounds, pinning Dylan Watts of Bloomington in 4:53 to win a semifinal on Friday. He dominated his first two opponents at state, opening with an 11-0 win over Highland's Tyson Rakers and following that with a 17-0 quarterfinal win over Patrick Tinsley of Wheeling.
